Achievements for FUHSD

Working for Students, Serving Community, Expanding Education

Naomi’s commitment to public education was beyond her children’s attendance at FUHSD - she has always been focused on ensuring the inclusion of diverse voices in decision making, especially in leadership for students and across the district. She first successfully ran for Trustee in 2018 - becoming the first Japanese American woman to serve on the School Board.

As a Trustee and FUHSD parent, Naomi has centered her service of keeping FUHSD a beacon of equity and excellence. She strengthened contracting principles and policies - including on cyberbullying, led the search for a new Superintendent, reviewed and and developed stronger partnerships with feeder school districts, city governments, and community organizations - that has produced results.

Key Service Achievements for FUHSD:

  • Successful passage of several community-supported Bond and Parcel Tax measures - $275M in Bond Measure funding and an additional $5M annually to improve academic and extracurricular programs 

  • Modernization and construction of new educational spaces, including

  • First-of-its-kind Robotics Facility available for all students district-wide

  • The Voyager Center - an alternative educational center for all students

  • New facilities at Fremont High - Field House and Auto Shop with renovated classrooms and cafeteria

  • New facilities at Homestead High School - Innovation Hub, Maker Space, Cafeteria and quad-space

  • Expanding the Educational Options Center for adult leaners

  • Long-term strategies to address student’s transportation, housing, and nutrition needs

  • Expansion of Wellness Centers and behavioral health support at ALL school sites

  • Increased professional development opportunities for certificated and classified staff that supports personal development too

  • Guiding the District through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, including school closures, remote learning, and the safe return to in-person instruction - balancing health and academic consistency

  • Strengthening partnerships with feeder school districts, cities, and community organizations - initiatives with Sunnyvale School District, and co-operative efforts to create teacher housing and funding for arts programs

Building a Stronger Voice for Our Communities

Naomi championed the creation of district-specific Trustee Areas in 2024, giving FUHSD families, parents, and students a stronger voice in district governance. The new Trustee Area 4 represents families in and around seven schools: Ellis Elementary, Cumberland Elementary, Cherry Chase Elementary, Vargas Elementary; Sunnyvale Middle School; and Fremont High School and Homestead High School.

These new Trustee Areas create an opportunity for Trustees to build deeper relationships with the communities they represent, listen more closely to students and families, and better understand the unique needs and strengths of each area. Click HERE for the new District map
